Location
Imperia consists of two districts that were independent cities
for centuries. One, Porto Maurizio, was shaped by rural culture,
trade and the nobility, the other Oneglia by industry and the
port.
Imperia is composed of two districts that for
centuries were independent cities. One, Porto Maurizio, was
characterized by peasant culture, trade and nobility, the other
Oneglia by industry and the port.
The old town of Porto
Maurizio, Parasio, has an almost completely preserved medieval
structure, a hill of houses with labyrinthine alleys, stairs and
underpasses. All wildly romantic, very authentic and fortunately
not yet "completely restaurated". Porto Maurizio also has a nice
little port and very nice sandy beaches. The old boulevard, Via
Cascione, has become a very interesting shopping street, with
many small stores, a market hall and nice bars. One part has
been converted into a pedestrian zone. Once a week there is a
big weekly market where you can buy everything from Parma ham,
fresh vegetables to bags and pots.
Porto Maurizio has
been able to retain its charm and has not fallen victim to mass
tourism.
